Mandatory e-invoice reception in France since 1 September 2026: what a WooCommerce store must do
The mandate is already in force. Here is what it actually requires from a WooCommerce store, what it does not require, and why most merchants discovering it now should also handle the emission side while they're at it.
What the reception mandate actually changes
Since 1 September 2026, every VAT-registered French company, including a micro-business or a sole trader selling on WooCommerce, must be able to receive an e-invoice from its suppliers. In practice: you can no longer refuse or ignore a Factur-X, UBL or CII file sent by a VAT-registered supplier, even if you keep ordering from them as before.
This obligation falls on your suppliers first, not on your store: they are the ones who must send you a compliant format, through an accredited platform (PDP) or the public portal. You don't need to install any software to be on the receiving end: a supplier cannot force you to change tools just to receive a file they choose to send you.
What this mandate does not require from your store
Receiving is not issuing. The 2026 mandate does not require you to produce e-invoices yourself for your own customers: that deadline is 1 September 2027 for small and medium businesses. You also don't need to become an accredited platform, or process received files any differently from a regular PDF invoice.
- Reception 2026: handled by your suppliers and their platform, no software install required on your side
- Emission 2027: your responsibility, for B2B sales and public contracts only
- Regular B2C sales from your store: not affected, in either case
Why a WooCommerce store shouldn't stop at reception
If you're discovering the reception mandate now, chances are you also sell, at least occasionally, to business customers or public buyers. Some of them already ask for a Factur-X file attached to your invoice, well before the 2027 deadline: a missing or malformed file delays payment, not the sale.
Getting ready for emission now, rather than in a rush in summer 2027, avoids two problems: scrambling with incomplete seller data (SIREN, VAT number, late-payment penalties), and losing B2B sales because you can't answer a request for a compliant file.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install software to comply with the 2026 reception mandate?
Not necessarily: receiving an e-invoice mostly depends on the platform your supplier chose. This plugin handles emission, not reception: it prepares you for 2027, not for the 2026 obligation itself.
Is my WooCommerce store in breach if I haven't changed anything since 1 September 2026?
If you keep receiving invoices from your suppliers in whatever form they send them (PDF or electronic), the mandate does not fall on you at this stage. The real risk arrives with emission, in 2027 for a small or medium business.
A B2B customer is already asking for a Factur-X file, what do I do?
That's exactly the case this plugin handles: generate the file from the relevant WooCommerce order, free in the base version, with the full EN 16931 profile and batch processing in Pro.
